Buzz Out Loud 1393: Science education: it's a crisis, people (podcast)

Hey, you know what we need a ribbon for, people? We need a ribbon for the fact that less than a third of U.S. students have even basic proficiency in science education. Science. Education. You know, the foundations of the universe? The familiarity with physics and electronics that leads to inventions like cars, computers, and fancy tablet computers? This is a serious problem, and sure, there's other news today, but this? This is important. Love, Molly.

So AOL is charging old, naive customers for services they don’t need. What’s that remind you of? How about the Ma Bell? It wasn’t that long ago that people were still being charged rent on their telephones, decades after you could buy your own phone for sometimes even less than the monthly fee! Maybe evil is just part of the communications services model.

Hi buzz crew

I watched anxiously as CES came and went; waiting for the ‘killer’ android tablet. You called it with the ‘Zoom’. Then the price was announced….$700..?????!!!!!!!
Are you kidding me??? I bought an ipad for my wife last year because she is too ill to be at her computer very long. I would never had paid the $499 for myself much less $700.
The upshot of this is that, after hearing the price of the zoom, I went to my local Barnes and Noble bookstore and bought a NOOK COLOR. In the few days since I’ve had it, I’ve overclocked it to 950MHz, installed ‘Launcher Pro’ along with my favorite apps, including Mediafly which I just used to watch BOL.

And in defense of grandparents everywhere, I’m a 61 year old grandpa.

And of course…….Love the show.

Buzz Crew,

I have a problem paying with my cell phone at Starbucks, but not for the reason emailed in on episode 1392, if someone can surreptitiously take a photo of the bar code while its out, he could almost certainly take a picture of my debit card that I use to pay with and do much more damage than a pound of coffee and a couple of macchiatos. No, my issue is that we’ve seen study after study that show cell phones to be some of the dirtiest things we carry, and for anecdotal evidence, walk into any office bathroom and you’ll hear someone who forgot to put the phone on mute. So now we have these toilet phones changing hands with people who prepare your food and drink with their bare hands (Yum!). Hopefully we can get NFC payments going soon.

Love ‘da show,

Rich in Lovely Cleveland

PS – I’m not a germ freak, but sharing toilet phones is nasty…
