Bringing real arcade games home

Birthday parties at the local arcade were amazing back when I was 8. Wound up on Coke and cake, with tokens jingling in our pockets, my classmates and I spun like dervishes from one arcade game to another. It was a most exciting time to be an 8-year-old boy.

Now that I am a parent, I have a slightly different perspective on how much fun it is to be in a building full of running and screaming kids. However, the thrill I got from playing the arcade games still remains fresh in my memory.

Dream Authentics makes playing these arcade classics at home possible. The company announced its new Excalibur arcade cabinet on Wednesday. The two-player cabinet is completely customizable using Dream Authentics' online configurator. Options include a custom marquee, stainless steel joystick, light guns and even cup holders.

Since each cabinet includes a PC inside, the unit is compatible with all PC-based games and PC emulators like MAME, letting you play the new Tiger Woods game or arcade favorites like "Donkey Kong" and "Frogger." Dream Authentics estimates that the console with built-in PC can play more than 5,000 different games. The unit ships with 80 Atari classic games preinstalled.

The cabinet can be connected to Xbox and PlayStation consoles for an exciting twist on game play. The system also can be configured for watching DVDs, listening to music or surfing the Internet.

This is no do-it-yourself kit. The console arrives completely customized from the company. It is ready to use on arrival.

The Excalibur retail price begins at $3,495.
