AST unfolds notebook

AST joined the ranks of other major manufacturers by announcing its own notebook computer aimed at the consumer market.

AST today joined the ranks of other major notebook manufacturers by announcing its own notebook computer aimed at the consumer market.

The new Ascentia J20 notebook will feature a 100-MHz Pentium processor, 11.3-inch SVGA dual-scan LCD screen, 8MB RAM and a 540MB hard drive. Other features include built-in infrared port and 16-bit Sound Blaster compatible audio support.

AST's new notebook uses a nickel-metal hydride battery and weighs just under six pounds. Initially, the Ascentia J20 will be offered in the U.S. through Sam's Club and Price Costco for $1,799.

AST's announcement follows recent consumer market-specific notebook PC introductions from vendors such as Compaq and IBM.
