Apple updates lowest-priced iMac

Apple Computer quietly updated its lowest-priced Macintosh this week, adding a faster processor and larger hard drive to the 15-inch G3 iMac. The $799 computer now comes with a 600MHz G3 processor, 128MB memory a 40GB hard drive and CD-ROM. The machine also is now available in Snow, Apple's iMac shade that looks a bit like a frosted light bulb. The Mac maker is no longer selling a $999 CD burner-equipped version of the original iMac.

Separately, Apple has added a build-to-order option on its online store for a 17-inch eMac with a combination drive that burns CDs and plays DVD movies. The machine costs $1,199, $100 more than the CD-RW-only version.
