The invite-only Apple event reported by AllThingsD last week has been confirmed. Apple has sent invitations to press inviting them to attend a conference at 10am PDT at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco on 22 October.

In true Apple style, the invitation makes no mention of what will be unveiled at the event, noting only that "We still have a lot to cover". It is expected that Apple will reveal the next-generation iPad and iPad Mini, as well as the new generation of OS X — Mavericks — and the new Mac Pro.

At last year's October event, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed the iPad Mini, the new iPad with retina display, the new iMac and the new 13-inch MacBook Pro. The iPhone 5 and fifth generation of iPods had previously been announced at the 2012 September event.

iPods seem to be a glaring absence this year, with speculation centred around iPad updates. Apple is expected to reveal a new, redesigned iPad with a smaller, flatter case and 64-bit A7 chip, and a retina display for the iPad Mini.
