KiSS DP-470

The KiSS Technology DP-470 is a good all-in-one DVD receiver solution for those who only require a relatively simple and easy-to-use home theatre system. It has enough power, features and compatibility to satisfy basic users, however, this over-simplified approach will not satisfy many power users. There are also a few bugs that need to be ironed out, but as it is firmware upgradeable, these issues should be resolved in the future.

Pivos XIOS DS Media Play

The XIOS DS Media Play mimics the visual appeal of the Apple TV tied into the excellence of XBMC, but the end result is anything but satisfying.

LG's take on a dual-tuner DVR works well and has some unique features, but it's expensive.

DViCO's TViX HD PVR promises a lot of functional ability, but it's not a product for those afraid to tinker.

Toshiba XD-E500

Toshiba's XD-E500 provides a simple way to make humble DVDs look a bit better, but don't be fooled into thinking that it'll magically turn them into Blu-Ray discs.

Samsung DVD-HR735

Samsung's DVD-HR735 offers HDMI connectivity, but beyond that it's a largely unexciting DVD recorder.

TiVo 160 Media Device

Despite missing some key features, the TiVo HD is a worthwhile investment if you don't want to pay for cable, and it poses no ongoing EPG fees.

Toshiba HDD-J35

Works well as a HD set top box and is an easy to use hard drive recorder that sports some impressive functions. Throw in HDMI and the Toshiba HDD-J35 becomes the HD set top box of choice for those who want to stay ahead of the technology curve.

Toshiba SD-P2900

The Toshiba SD-P2900 is a portable DVD player with a wealth of features, but for the price you can also afford a laptop with an onboard DVD recorder.

Dvico TViX HD M-6600N

The M-6600N is a feature-rich PVR let down badly by stability issues.

The FetchTV is a harbinger of good things to come; it easily integrates free-to-air and IPTV channels and presents them in a fuss-free way. We wish there was more channel variety, though.

LG LST-4100P

The LG LST-4100P is a solid high definition set top box which comes recommended for anyone with a DVI-compatible TV.

LG's DVD recorder offers plenty of recording space and an in-built digital tuner, but the lack of HD capability really hurts.

Sony SVR-HD900

An expensive unit offering twin HD tuners and large capacity storage, but with average recording quality.

Telstra T-Box

Telstra's T-Box is a great storefront for BigPond Movies, but it is seriously lacking as a PVR and as the central component in a home theatre.

Topfield TRF-2460 Masterpiece HD Plus

The TRF-2460 does what it's set out to do well and the Ice TV feature is handy, but the almost identically specified TRF-7170 undercuts it on price by a handy margin.

Topfield TF5000PVRt with ICEguide

Aside from the arduous update process for the ICEguide EPG, the Topfield TF5000PVRt is one of most versalite and user friendly digital recorders we've seen.
