Stratus Technologies, a maker of computers that use redundant components to decrease the chances that hardware failure will crash the system, has sold a server to Clermont County, Ohio, to run its 911 emergency phone call services. The entry-level system, which uses HP's version of the Unix operating system, costs $107,000, Stratus said.
However, the newer Windows 2000 version of the Stratus technology, called the ftServer, will cost substantially less. The company said Clermont County has also ordered a Windows system that costs $37,000. The 180,000-person county logs 3,900 emergency 911 calls per week, Stratus said.
