Sony jumps into the 13-inch ULV laptop crowd with the Vaio Y series
Sony's new Vaio Y series is 1.2-inches thick and weighs around 4.2 pounds making it plenty thin but also a bit on the heavy side for a thin 13-inch laptop. In part that's because of the magnesium chassis that adds a nice durable feel.
Hardly a day goes by that we don't recommend a 13-inch laptop to someone for their specific computing needs. After all, it's the only size that we find big enough for all-day use, but small enough to carry around several times a week (but every day would be pushing it).
While Apple's MacBook may be the archetype 13-inch laptop, almost every other PC maker has one or more models, and many of the current ones use Intel's latest ULV processors (non-ULV options are also available) to keep the systems thin, light, and energy efficient (even if they give up a little in terms of pure computing power).
Sony's new Vaio Y series (available with ULV processors) is 1.2 inches thick and weighs around 4.2 pounds, making it plenty thin but also a bit on the heavy side for a thin 13-inch laptop. The Vaio Y starts at $800, and is available for preorder on January 6.
