Short Take: Adaptec lays off 7 percent

Adaptec will reduce its workforce by 200 to 250 people, or about 7 percent, during its first fiscal quarter ending June 30, in response to turmoil in the personal computer industry, the company said. The layoffs predominantly will affect the company's U.S. work force. Adaptec estimates that it will take a restructuring charge of approximately $8 to 12 million in the first quarter of fiscal 1999 as a result of the downsizing.
