Qualcomm to offer Net2Phone services in Eudora
Net2Phone says Qualcomm will sell Net2Phone's Internet-telephone services through its Eudora email software.
Terms weren't disclosed. Qualcomm, developer of the second-most popular cellular-phone technology, will box Net2Phone's software with its popular Eudora program. A co-branded calling card will allow Eudora users to make calls and send faxes over Net2Phone's network at reduced rates.
Separately, the Hackensack, N.J.-based firm said its fiscal first-quarter loss widened as spending to increase services more than tripled.
Net2Phone said its loss widened to $8.37 million, or 17 cents a share, in the quarter ended Oct. 31, from $1.23 million, or 4 cents, a year ago. Revenue more than doubled to $13.1 million from $5.7 million.
Today's agreement gives Net2Phone access to more than 20 million Eudora users worldwide and marks the latest in a string of alliances. Net2Phone recently unveiled agreements with America Online and Priceline.com aimed at increasing the visibility of its software, which lets users call other computers, phones and fax numbers.
Net2Phone charges for computer-to-telephone and computer-to-fax connections. PC-to-PC calling is free.
As part of the agreement, Net2Phone will sponsor a new version of Eudora that displays advertisements in the lower corner of the email window. IDT, a long-distance and Internet-access company, owns about 48 percent of Net2Phone.
