Open-source gurus win software awards

ZDNet, a CNET Networks site, and Open Source Initiative on Thursday announced four winners of their first Open Source Award. The award is designed to encourage excellence in open-source software.

Awards were given to Julian Seward and the Valgrind project for creating an x86-based Linux systems debugger; the Pango project for creating a way to lay out and render international text; the VideoLAN project for enabling all video types to stream on a TCP/IP network; and Paul Davis and the JACK (Jack Audio Connection Kit) project for developing a low-latency audio server to create and edit high-quality audio on open-source operating systems.
