Novell serves up new NetWare
The network software maker ships an updated version of its NetWare operating system tailored for small businesses.
Novell's release of NetWare for Small Business 4.2 is part of an effort at the company to win back customers within that market segment--a lucrative niche that has increasingly swung toward investments in Microsoft's Windows NT operating system and related applications.
Highlighting the update is new integration--facilitated by distributors Ingram Micro and Tech Data--between NetWare for Small Business and the QuickBooks Pro 6.0 accounting software package from Intuit, a program tailored for small businesses with over two million users, according to the company. The integrated software will be delivered via Tech Data and Ingram Micro, at a price of $1,595.
Other components in the release, priced at $1,295 for the base operating system and associated features, include an Internet Connection Wizard, BorderManager FastCache, Fusion from NetObjects, NetSheild and VirusScan software from Network Associates, FaxWare from Tobit Software, and Novell's own back-up utility.
The company previously announced plans for the small business upgrade.
Also, continuing its efforts to assist its customers preparing their systems for the Year 2000, Novell today announced a new Y2K assessment tool for NetWare users. The Ferret tool goes into a customer's server, collects all Novell files information and provides patch links or information on how to purchase them. The new tool runs on Windows 95, 98 and NT.
An updated version of Novell's Zen Works directory-based desktop management tool, dubbed version 1.1, will also include a five-user version of Check 2000, Year 2000 software from Greenwich Mean time.
