New Apple G3 computers coming

Apple will release high-end desktop systems later this month with new features.

Apple Computer has officially released four new G3 desktop systems and some resellers are already taking orders for an unannounced G3 desktop with a 366-MHz processor.

The new configurations come amid a flurry of activity at the company. On Saturday, Apple will release the much-anticipated iMac, a $1,299 Macintosh with a 233-MHz G3 processor and high marks for style. The relatively affordable computer is expected to boost both revenues and unit shipments.

The new G3 systems, which are modifications of the performance and features of current Power Macs, range in power from the 266-MHz G3 processor to the 333-MHz chip.

Apple has not officially announced a G3 system with a 366-MHz processor. That corporate technicality, however, has not stopped some resellers from advertising 366-MHz systems, or even taking orders, for the machines. Cyberian Outpost is taking orders for a 366-MHz G3 with 128MB of memory, a 4.5GB hard drive and a 24X CD-ROM for $2,877.95.

The skullduggery surrounding the 366-MHz systems stems from manufacturing issues, said sources. Apple was ready to release the 366-MHz systems but has not been able to make enough systems to meet prospective demand. Cyberian's Web site states that the product should begin shipping on August 15. Other electronic resellers, including MacMall have posted ads and information on the 366-MHz systems.

The latest configurations, which all include CD-ROM drives, are as follows:

  • Power Mac desktop G3/266 MHz, 32MB of memory, and 4GB hard drive for $1,599.

  • Power Mac desktop G3/300 MHz, 64MB of memory, 6GB hard drive, and Zip drive priced at $1,999.

  • Power Mac minitower G3/333 MHz, 64MB of memory, 8GB hard drive, and Zip drive costs $2,599.

  • Power Mac minitower G3/366 MHz, 128MB of memory, and 4GB hard drive for $2,999.
