Microsoft promises Xbox One fixes in major update
Tops on the agenda will be fixes to the console's live and social features, a Microsoft exec tells Engadget.
Yes, Microsoft does plan to fix some of the bugs and quirks in the Xbox One in an upcoming update.
Chatting with the folks at Engadget, Xbox chief product officer Marc Whitten said that he's thrilled with the 3 million in sales and the reaction from consumers. But he acknowledged that more work lies ahead to fix what's broken in the new console. The initial priority, though, will be on the Xbox One's "Live experience," meaning the different social features.
"The feedback we've gotten is pretty valid; some of the social stuff is hidden or harder to use than it was on the Xbox 360," Whitten told Engadget. "So you're gonna see us come out with an update where, well, we're going to fix those things. As a person who's been pretty involved in building Xbox Live for the last decade, I take it pretty seriously when people say it's harder to get into a party, and the defaults aren't right, and I don't like the model."
Whitten didn't reveal a specific time frame for the upcoming update, though Endgaget's take was that it would come sooner rather than later. Game streaming is another item on the agenda, but that feature isn't likely to debut anytime soon.
At the very least, Microsoft does seem to be listening to customer complaints as it preps updates for the Xbox One.
"Let's take an update and really go through a big list of what we're hearing from customers, what we know is broken with the architecture, areas that we want to improve or complete," Whitten added. "I think that's a theme you'll really see us push on -- that Live experience."
And what of other issues plaguing Xbox One owners? Whitten alluded to further improvements on the horizon.
"Everything from getting more apps out faster, some of the TV stuff -- improving some of that, getting the scale of that internationally where we don't have some of that," Whitten said. "So I think you're gonna see that come pretty quickly."
Whitten also promised that updates will roll out faster than they did with the Xbox 360. So those of you still dealing with Xbox One problems hopefully will see some fixes before too long.
