Micronics continues Baby AT production
Micronics will be producing a new motherboard in the Baby AT form factor based on Intel's 440FX Pentium Pro chipset.
The D6-IN features the 200-MHz Pentium Pro processor in the familiar 13-inch by 8.5-inch Baby AT motherboard form factor instead of Intel's new ATX form factor. Micronics says it is doing this because there is still a significant market for the traditional Baby AT motherboard designs.
A motherboard is the main circuit board in a personal computer that contains all of the core chips, such as the processor. Intel is the largest motherboard manufacturer in the United States.
Specifically, Micronics said that the market is moving slowly from the Baby AT to the ATX chassis, so while the distribution market continues to adjust, Micronics will supply a high performance chipset in the older form factor.
The D6-IN supports both the Fast Page Mode (FPM) and Enhanced Data Out (EDO) memory technologies for improved performace. Error Checking and Correction (ECC) is supported as well. The board offers Mode 4 PCI, Enhanced IDE, PCI and ISA expansion slots, and optional Universal Serial Bus (USB) on the motherboard.
Evaluation units are currently available, with volume shipments expected in September 1996.
