The direct-sales PC vendor announces price reductions on computers across its corporate desktop and workstation lines.
The cuts, which affect Micron's Powerdigm workstations and ClientPro corporate desktop systems, follow price cuts by Dell, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and Digital on similar systems last week. Many of the cuts announced by those companies ran into the double-digits percentagewise.
Processor prices are also dropping, as Intel and AMD plan major discounts on their chip lines.
Micron's Powerdigm personal workstations got a $600 price reduction. The Powerdigm ships standard with the Windows NT 4.0 operating system, two 200-MHz Intel Pentium Pro processors, 64MB of memory, a 4GB hard disk drive, a network card, a high-end graphics card from Number Nine Visual Technology, and a 19-inch monitor.
At the lower end of the spectrum, the new price for a ClientPro MTE desktop PC is $1,549. This business PC comes with a 166-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology, 16MB of memory, Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0, a 2.1GB hard disk drive, and an Ethernet network card.
Direct marketers such as Micron, Dell, and Gateway 2000 have claimed an increasing share of the market in recent years. By dealing directly with the end customers, the companies can undercut traditional computer manufacturers by $100 to $150.
