Maxtor stretches its hard drive capacity

Maxtor on Monday increased the capacity of its line of Personal Storage 3000LE external hard drives to 120GB from 40GB. The 120GB drive sells for about $300; the 40GB version costs about $200. The new drives, like some of the previous models, will be outfitted with USB 2.0, which provides maximum throughput to 480mbps, compared with 12mbps for USB 1.1. Microsoft on Friday released USB 2.0 drivers for Windows XP, which can be downloaded using Windows Update. For computers without USB 2.0, Milpitas, Calif.-based Maxtor sells an add-on card for around $50.
