IBM updates Java mainframe software

Big Blue on Friday will deliver a version of its WebSphere Java server software for its zSeries mainframe computers. WebSphere is IBM's Java-based application server for building and implementing custom business applications. With the software upgrade, IBM is introducing a new pricing model that is designed to bring WebSphere prices in line with that of other mainframe software.

Rather than charge for the software on a per-processor basis, IBM will bill customers based on the computing capacity they use. The new software is also compatible with version 1.3 of the Java 2 Enterprise Edition specification and Web services standards.
