Fewer tech job cuts reported in January
The number of job cuts in the technology industry fell again in January, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. About 1,800 workers were laid off during the month--25 percent fewer than the 2,400 laid off in December, and 86 percent fewer than the 12,800 job cuts made in January a year ago, Challenger said. This is the fewest number of layoffs made since June 2000, when companies slashed 1,650 jobs. Since December 1999, about 144,200 technology jobs have been eliminated, Challenger said. Some analysts have said they see the decline in staff reductions as a sign that the recession is letting up.
