Earnings Roundup: Elantec leads chip earnings barrage

Elantec soared past analysts' estimates in its fourth quarter Thursday, earning $8.1 million, or 33 cents a share, on sales of $36.9 million.

First Call Corp. consensus expected the chipmaker to earn 27 cents a share in the quarter.

Elantec (Nasdaq: ELNT) shares closed up $14.88 to $101.94 ahead of the earnings report.

The $36.9 million in sales marks a 158 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter when it pocketed $1.7 million, or 8 cents a share, on sales of $14.3 million.

"Elantec continued to experience significant revenue and profit growth in the fourth quarter," said CEO Rich Beyer in a prepared release. "We are very proud about growing the company 100 percent over fiscal year 1999."

Last quarter, Elantec cruised past analysts' estimates when it returned a profit of $5.8 million, or 24 cents a share, on sales of $28.6 million.

Its shares hit a 52-week high of $107.06 in September after bottoming out at $6.38 last October.

Among other chip companies reporting earnings after the bell Thursday:

  • TriQuint (Nasdaq: TQNT) easily topped analysts' estimates in its third quarter, earning $21 million, or 24 cents a share, on sales of $80.6 million.

    Analysts pegged the chipmaker for a profit of 19 cents a share in the quarter.

    The $80.6 million in sales represents a 90 percent jump from the year-ago quarter when it earned $7.2 million, or 9 cents a share, on sales of $42.5 million.

    TriQuint shares closed up $9.56 to $33.38 ahead of the earnings report.

  • Pericom Semiconductor (Nasdaq: PSEM) beat the Street in its third quarter, earning $6 million, or 22 cents a share, on sales of $33.4 million.

    Analysts were expecting a profit of 20 cents a share.

    The $33.4 million in sales represents an 89 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter when it earned $5.2 million, or 19 cents a share, on sales of $17.6 million.

    Pericom shares finished up $4.50 to $27.38 ahead of the earnings report.

  • Mattson Technology (Nasdaq: MTSN) also plowed past analysts' estimates in its third quarter, raking in $8.5 million, or 39 cents a share, on sales of $58.2 million.

    First Call Corp. consensus expected the chip-equipment maker to earn 33 cents a share in the quarter.

    The $58.2 million marks a 99 percent jump from the year-ago quarter when it earned $300,000, or 2 cents a share, on sales of $29.2 million.

    The stock closed up $2.75 to $11.81 ahead of the earnings report.

  • Cylink (Nasdaq: CYLK) posted an operating loss of $7.1 million on sales of $17.2 million in its third quarter.

    Its shares closed up 44 cents to $6.75 ahead of the earnings report.

  • Applied Microsystems (Nasdaq: APMC) posted a third-quarter loss of $1.9 million, or 27 cents a share, on sales of $7.8 million.

    Its shares closed up 81 cents to $4.69 ahead of the earnings report.

    There was no First Call Corp. consensus estimate in the quarter.
