Iomega announces a new tape backup drive which will store 2GB of data and will retail for under $200.
The Ditto 2GB will allow users to back up hard drives with the click of an icon, the company said. The new drive is backward-compatible with other tape formats, including QIC-80, 80W, 3010 and QIC-3020, as well as the TR-1, 2, and 3 (Travan).
The external model will have an estimated street price of $199.95 and the internal version $149.95. Both products are currently shipping, according to Iomega.
Iomega (IOMG) says it will manufacture the drives while Sony (SNE) will manufacture the tape cartridges, but both drives and tapes will be sold under the Iomega brand. Cartridges are expected to have a street price of $19.95.
In conjunction with the announcement, Iomega will reduce its price on the external Ditto Easy 3200 from $299.95 to $249.95, and the price of the internal model will be reduced from $249.95 to $199.95.
