Corel aims suite at sub-$1,000 PCs

Corel continues to make moves to boost sales by bundling its office applications suite on sub-$1000 PCs.

Corel continues to make moves to boost sales by bundling its office applications suite on sub-$1000 PCs.

The Canadian software maker today announced a partnership with Microworkz Computer to package WordPerfect Suite 8 on the Microworkz WEBzter family of personal computers, which sell for $699.95.

"This agreement represents a leap forward in our efforts to increase our penetration of the sub-$1,000 PC market," Kevin McNeil, vice president of Worldwide OEM Sales at Corel, said in a statement

Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 OEM is a bundle consisting of the Corel WordPerfect 8 word processor; Corel Quattro Pro 8 spreadsheet application; and Corel Presentations software.

Also included are CorelCentral for personal information management, Corel Photo House 1.1, Envoy 7 Viewer, and Quick View Plus.

Corel announced a similar agreement last month with PC Chips, a major manufacturer of PC motherboards, a deal that means Corel's WordPerfect suite of business software programs will be sold with PCs from manufacturers using PC Chips' motherboards.

Both deals are aimed at building Corel's installed base of users, with the hopes of eventually upgrading them to WordPerfect Office 2000, Corel said.

Corel's flagship WordPerfect office suite has 22 million U.S. users, up 10 percent in the last 12 months. This year Corel will unveil a slew of product updates, which management said will boost sales.
