Compaq to Sell Net-Access PC in '96

The era of less expensive PCs aimed at home users who want only minimal access to the Internet may be on the horizon. Compaq has announced that it will enter the low-cost PC market with a $1,500 PC due out next year.

Compaq's new model will include Intel's 100-MHz Pentium chip, 8MB of RAM, and a 1,000MB hard drive, according to company officials.

The average cost of a new PC has ranged from $2,000 to $2,500 over the last few years. Prices are expected to continue decreasing.
