Compaq (CPQ) introduced a new line of low-cost Pentium-based notebook PCs for corporate customers starting at under $2,000. The company also cut prices on its Armada 4100 and 1100 series notebook PCs by up to 35 percent, and is now offering a model for under $1,000.

The new Armada 1500 series offers businesses hardware and software inventory management. Compaq is including in the 1500 series its Intelligent Managability technology, which enables information system personnel to keep track of the hardware and software on PCs through the company's network.

The series also includes hardware monitoring technologies. For example, the operating temperature of notebooks connected to a network can be monitored, helping to extend the life of the computer.

The 1500 series includes either a 120-MHz or 133-MHz "classic" (non-MMX) Pentium processor from Intel 16MB of memory, and an 11.3-inch dual-scan or 12.1-inch active-matrix LCD screen. A 10X CD-ROM drive, 33.6 data-fax modem, and integrated power supply are standard on all models. Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 can be preinstalled on the systems, according to Compaq.

Compaq will offer an optional docking station for the 1500 series, with or without an Ethernet connector, which allows connection to peripherals such as an external keyboard, mouse, and printer.

The Armada 1500 with 120-MHz processor and 11.3-inch display is priced at $1,999. Pricing for other models has not been finalized. The new models are currently shipping, according to Compaq.

In related news, Compaq cut prices on its Armada 4100 and 1100 series notebooks by up to 35 percent. The 4100 series are available with 100-, 120-, or 133-MHz Pentium processor and 11.3-inch to 12.1-inch display, while the entry level 1100 series offers 100- or 120-MHz Pentium processor with a 10.4-inch display.
