Compaq lays off workers from PC group

The computer maker lays off 450 employees mostly from its commercial PC group as part of an ongoing effort to trim operations.

Compaq laid off 450 employees as part of an ongoing effort to trim operations, the company confirmed today.

The Houston-based PC maker let go approximately 450 employees yesterday, most of whom worked in the commercial PC group, according to Compaq spokesman Alan Hodel.

The layoffs were part of a restructuring announced last fall, which included plans to eliminate 7,000 positions by the end of the second half, Hodel said.

"We're positioning that part of the company for future growth," he said. Compaq cut management, engineering and marketing staff.
