Compaq, IBM go postal

Two of the world's largest PC makers are going postal. Compaq Computer and IBM have signed agreements to sell PCs to U.S. Postal Service workers at a discounted price, the companies said Thursday. The agreements are significant to the PC makers because, as worldwide demand for PCs slows, the companies are looking for new areas of growth. Later this quarter, 800,000 postal employees will be able to purchase any IBM computer available on the company's Web site or the Compaq Presario Internet PC, either as a desktop or laptop. Peripherals and Internet service will also be available.
