Compaq Computer on Thursday announced its new Modular Storage Array 1000, a data storage system that can connect to servers using storage networks based on the new 2 gigabit-per-second Fibre Channel technology. The system is intended for customers who need to attach lower-end servers to storage systems, Compaq said. Storage networks today rely on separate switches to let several servers share a storage system. The Modular Storage Array 1000 has the option to have its own switch built in. The system can store 1 terabyte of data, but when attached to two extra shelves filled with disk drives, it has a total capacity of 3 terabytes.
