Compaq Computer (CPQ) today announced it is shipping its highest-performance notebook PC in the flagship Armada line.

The Armada 7770DMT comes with Intel's "Tillamook" 233-MHz Pentium processor with MMX technology. The fastest processor Compaq offered to date in this line ran at 166 MHz.

A standard configuration of the notebook includes a 20X CD-ROM drive, a 12.1-inch active-matrix display with 800-by-600 resolution, a 3GB hard drive, and 32MB of RAM. The 7700 series also features a built-in AC adapter, a three-speaker sound system, and a built-in 33.6-kbps modem upgradable to 56-kbps technology.

The computer comes preloaded with Windows 95, with support for NT 4.0 available. It features a MultiBay architecture that lets users employ devices such as floppy and CD-ROM drives interchangeably in a single bay.

The computer is priced at just under $5,000.

In related news, Compaq announced a Universal Serial Bus (USB) CardBus PC card. This allows for connection to peripherals, such as digital video cameras and scanners, that use the higher-performance USB standard. The CardBus PC card also allows connection of several USB peripherals to the notebook and the ArmadaStation, a docking station.

The Armada 1500, 7300, and 7700 lines all support the card.
