Advanced Micro Devices has cranked up
the speed of its Athlon processors again.
As previously reported, computers with
the 1.1-GHz Athlon will begin shipping
today. Compaq Computer, Fujitsu
Siemens, Gateway, Hewlett-Packard
and IBM are among the computer
makers expected to adopt the chip.

Compaq beats HP in PC sales
Compaq Computer in July reclaimed the
lead in retail PC sales from rival Hewlett-
Packard but sacrificed profits to regain its
crown. Compaq's retail resurgence came
after the company slashed prices to regain
market share at the expense of profits,
analysts said.
Intel stumbles in chip speed race
Dell and IBM have stopped shipping
computers with Intel's fastest Pentium III
chip, CNET News.com has learned. It is
not clear whether Intel has been unable to
produce enough of the 1.13-GHz chips or
whether there was a technical glitch. Intel
executives were not immediately available
to comment.
Analyst holds gloomy outlook for Yahoo
Is the worst yet to come for Yahoo? A
growing list of Wall Street analysts certainly
thinks so. Many analysts are buckling their
seat belts for next quarter, when a predicted
revenue slowdown could finally show its face
in Yahoo's earnings results.
Supreme Court passes on first shot at Microsoft
The Supreme Court today passed on hearing
Microsoft's appeal of the antitrust case against
it--at least for now. The high court still could
add the software behemoth to its next list of
cases to be released Sept. 8 or at some point
thereafter.
Deutsche Telekom plays with regulatory fire
Deutsche Telekom showed no fear of its foes
in Congress as it moved today to continue its
purchase of wireless systems in the United
States, in spite of a House hearing next week
and upcoming floor action in the Senate.
