BroadVision gets into the B2B marketplace game

The software company unveils MarketMaker, an application that helps companies quickly build their own business-to-business marketplaces on the Web.

Aiming to get in on the world of online business-to-business marketplaces, software maker BroadVision today unveiled MarketMaker, software that will help companies quickly build their own marketplaces on the Web.

The Redwood City, Calif.-based company said its partner Corio, an application service provider (ASP) that offers BroadVision's core e-commerce personalization software via a pay-per-use model, will host the new product.

MarketMaker will be made generally available Sept. 29. License fees will be approximately $400,000, the company said.

Online marketplaces, or trading exchanges, have become popular with many companies and within specific industries because they are thought to help cut costs through improved price and inventory management.

Software from players such as VerticalNet, Commerce One and Ariba help companies conduct business with their partners and suppliers over the Web through these marketplaces.

BroadVision's MarketMaker includes features such as reverse auction and accounting tools that manage order status and tracking. Other features allow companies to generate personalized content such as news feeds and event notices to keep members informed and interested in the marketplace, the company said.

As part of its agreement with BroadVision, Corio will help develop and sell Marketmaker.net, BroadVision's MarketMaker product offered in a typical ASP model, which will charge companies on a per-user, per-month basis. San Carlos, Calif.-based Corio, which was one of the early players in the burgeoning application hosting market, also hosts and manages enterprise applications from PeopleSoft, SAP and Commerce One.
