Best Software reshuffles, cuts jobs

Best Software, the maker of ACT, Peachtree and Saleslogix business applications, is reorganizing itself in a drive to grow sales and streamline its operations, the company said Thursday. As part of the move, the company has regrouped six divisions into two. Consolidating the groups should help the company to do more cross-selling and to coordinate technology development across its product lines, said Ron Verni, CEO of Best Software. The company, which employs 2,100 people, also cut about 60 jobs to reduce redundant positions, Verni said.

Best Software, the $409 million U.S. subsidiary of U.K.'s Sage Group, competes with Intuit and Microsoft in the market for small business accounting and customer service software. Sage has bucked the trend of declining sales that dogs much of the software industry, reporting that its pretax profits rose 14 percent and that revenue grew by 4 percent in the six-month period ended March 31.
