Artemis adds cost estimation

Buying Software Productivity Research will allow Artemis to add cost estimation to its software development project management system.

Project management software maker Artemis Management Systems is adding cost estimation to its software development project management system.

The Boulder, Colorado-based firm today bought Software Productivity Research (SPR) for an undisclosed amount.

SPR was founded in 1984 by Capers Jones, who made a name for himself by pioneering systems that calculate and track the cost of software development projects. SPR software uses past experience and project data to make such calculations.

"SPR's relationship with Artemis signals a move toward an integrated management tool suite that will share common interfaces and data repositories and will by definition simplify the often tedious tasks associated with IS project management," Jones said in a prepared statement.

Artemis's plan for SPR includes melding SPR's Knowledge Plan product to Artemis's Views product. Artemis is hoping the combination will allow it to offer customers a system that manages all phases of software development including estimation, multiproject planning, budgeting, resource tracking, quality management, and analytical reporting.

SPR is to continue operations from its headquarters in Burlington, Massachusetts, as an independent subsidiary of Artemis. Jones is to take over as chief scientist at Artemis.
