Another notebook near $1,000
Compaq cuts the price of an older notebook PC to bring it close to the $1,000 mark, while also introducing a new portable.
Compaq announced that it will discount an older Armada model to make room for a newer version. Compaq will offer the 133-MHz Armada 1530DM for $1,099, a discount of 27 percent. The system comes with a 1.4GB hard drive, a 12.1-inch display, and CD-ROM drive.
Earlier this month, Compaq cut prices across its notebook line, becoming one of the first PC-makers to offer a range of sub-$1,000 notebook models.
Also today, Compaq released a new model at the high end of its Armada line. The Armada 7362DMT features a 233-MHz Pentium MMX processor, a 3GB hard drive, 12.1 inch active-matrix display, and a 33.6-kbps modem. The Armada 7362DMT has an estimated retail price of $3,699.
This compares with the existing Armada 7370DMT, which comes with a 233-Mhz Pentium MMX chip, a 4GB hard drive, and a 12.1-inch display. Major resellers such as Computer Discount Warehouse sell that system for about $4,300.
The announcements come in the wake of last week?s introduction of the Pentium II chip for notebooks, which analysts say will likely drive down the price of older models using Pentium MMX chip. Compaq is also facing bloated inventory levels, which it partially blamed for missing earnings expectations last quarter.
