AMD gets new memory chief

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD on Tuesday appointed Dr. Bertrand Cambou to lead as vice president of its Memory Group. The unit manufactures flash memory for cell phone makers and others. Cambou will report to Hector Ruiz, AMD president and chief operating officer. Cambou, formerly with Paris-based Ingenico, will succeed Walid Maghribi, president of the Memory Group, according to a company representative. Maghribi resigned from AMD for personal reasons but will help with the transition through March 1. Flash memory is one of AMD's primary products. The company sold approximately $1.5 billion of flash in 2001. And, according to the spokesman, the division has remained profitable for 12 years, although sometimes the margin has been razor thin on memory.
