Amazon reveals plans for new bookstore in Chicago

The new store, expected to open next year, will be the online retailer's fourth Amazon Books location.

Amazon's interest in building out physical stores is growing.

The world's largest online retailer said it plans to open its fourth Amazon Books bookstore in Chicago by next year.

"We are excited to be bringing Amazon Books to Southport in Chicago," spokeswoman Deborah Bass said in a statement Friday. "Stay tuned for additional details down the road."

The new stores, combined with a series of college campus pickup locations, illustrate Amazon's increased ambitions to expand into physical stores, though the company so far has seemed to be taking a slow approach to this effort. Amazon has been able to reinvent shopping with its website, but analysts say it will need to open more stores to keep up growth and capture an even bigger base of customers.

Despite Amazon's speedy growth and online dominance, e-commerce in the US accounts for just 8 percent of total retail sales, according to the US Census Bureau.

In addition to the new Chicago store, Amazon opened its first Amazon Books in Seattle in November and has new stores slated for San Diego and Portland, Oregon.

The Chicago Tribune earlier reported the new store plans on Thursday.
