Dell has begun large shipments of a 200-MHz Pentium system, an indication that Intel is finally shipping the fastest Pentium processor in volume.
To date, this chip has had only limited availability. A Dell marketing representative confirmed that the chip is now shipping with "standard [reduced] lead times" of ten days for new systems. Intel also indicated that the chip is shipping in volume.
The Dell Dimension P200v is a system designed for small and medium-sized business and home users. The P200v "represents the first time Dell has offered the fastest available Pentium processor in an entry-level system priced less than $2,000," the company said.
For $1,999, the Dell Dimension P200v minitower system comes configured with 16MB of synchronous DRAM, 256 KB of pipeline burst cache memory, a 2.1GB hard drive, a Dell 15TX Trinitron monitor, 64-bit graphics with 2MB of video memory, an 8X CD-ROM, Windows 95, and a three-year limited warranty.
