Zuckerberg on Graph Search, Home: Give us time

Facebook's CEO defends the slow progress of the two recently released products. He says people aren't ready for Home or Graph Search yet, but that will change over time.

Facebook's most recent products, Home and Graph Search, aren't gaining much popularity with users, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the products are just too new for consumers.

Zuckerberg tried to manage expectations for Home, a software suite of Facebook apps for Android, and Graph Search, Facebook's search engine, during the company's second-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. He said the company plans to invest in these products for years to come.

"Things like Home and Graph Search, are really new use cases -- different category of product," he said. "I think of it more as a seed that we're planting that is going to create a new pillar of the ecosystem rather than drafting off something that exists. I definitely think that we have to look at this over the long term."

Facebook started testing Graph Search in January, but formally rolled the product out to its U.S. users earlier in July. Initially pegged as a play at Google's or Yelp's ad dollars, Graph Search has a way to go before it can make a dent in the search or recommendations market.

Similarly, Home has not picked up many users, especially considering how many Facebook users access the site through mobile now.

But Zuckerberg said he expects them to become "market-leading products," over time, and only Facebook -- with the data of 1.15 billion users -- is in a position to get them there.

Only time will tell if Home and Graph Search can live up to his expectations.
