Yahoo Mail gets spruced up for its 16th birthday

Yahoo Mail gets a multiple-platform makeover on its desktop, iOS, Android, and Windows 8 versions.

Yahoo Mail's new look.

Yahoo Mail celebrates its sweet 16 birthday by offering users a host of new features.

Rolling out on Tuesday, the revamped Yahoo Mail adds a Conversations view so that you can organize your e-mail based on threads. Hover over an individual e-mail, and options pop up to let you search, start, or delete that message. You also can collapse the left-hand toolbar to focus specifically on your messages.

The free Yahoo Mail now includes several features previously available only in the $19.99-per-year Mail Plus version, Yahoo said in a blog post.

Yahoo Mail users now can adopt disposable e-mail addresses, use enhanced filters to sort new messages, and automatically forward their Yahoo mail to a different account. Yahoo is also giving each user 1 terabyte of storage space to house a healthy number of messages and attachments.

Yahoo Mail users who run a desktop e-mail client, such as Microsoft Outlook, can set up a POP3 account to download their Yahoo messages and read them offline.

Finally, Yahoo Mail users can apply a theme, including one based on Flickr Photos, to their desktop browser and mobile app. Set up a theme on one device and it carries over to the other devices.

The spruced up Yahoo Mail is available in English in the US, the UK, Canada, the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa. More countries and languages are coming soon, promises Yahoo. The updates to the iOS, Android, and Windows 8 apps are due to surface today.

A separate Yahoo post provides a closer look at the new features.
