When it comes to cult TV shows, Yahoo appears to be following Netflix's lead. The tech giant announced Monday that it will host the highly-demanded sixth season of the television series "Community."

In May, NBC said it was canceling the show, which caused an uproar from the "Community" fan base. Within hours of the cancellation news, people in the tech and entertainment world began speculating which online streaming service would snap up the series. Yahoo and its partner Sony Pictures Television got the dibs.

"Yahoo is all about connecting the best creators to the audiences who love their work," Yahoo CMO Kathy Savitt said in a statement. "'Community' has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base who have fought hard to keep this amazing show alive."

"Community" is an offbeat comedy about a quirky cast of characters who inhabit a sub-par educational institution called Greendale Community College. Ever since the news broke on Monday that a sixth season is on the way, the show's creators and stars, like Dan Harmon and Joel McHale, have been tweeting #SixSeasonsAndAMovie and #CommunitySixthSeason.

"I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo," Harmon said in a statement. "I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, Big Bang Theory. Look out, Bang Bus!"

With the onset of online streaming, the idea of tech companies continuing cult television series has gained momentum. The most famous example of this is Netflix debuting a fourth season of the uber-popular "Arrested Development" in May 2013.

Besides "Community," Yahoo has also been steadily releasing other original content over the past year. Additionally, it has aired archives and current episodes of television shows like "Saturday Night Live," "The Daily Show," and "The Colbert Report."

The sixth season of "Community" is slated to begin this fall with 13 new episodes, which will air exclusively on Yahoo's video platform -- Yahoo Screen.
