Vendors say no credit cards required

Trying to ease fears about use of credit cards over the Net, Connect and Entex will next week announce a system for electronic business-to-business transactions that won't require the exchange of credit card numbers.

Trying to ease fears about use of credit cards over the Net, Connect and Entex will next week announce a system for electronic business-to-business transactions that won't require the exchange of credit card numbers.

By this summer, the two companies will offer a complete solution for setting up businesses that want to sell computer products on the Internet. Sources said the solution will include Connect's OneServer, a complete Web publishing and electronic commerce offering.

The solution will also include a service, offered by First Data, which will allow businesses to set up charge accounts without the use of credit cards. Instead, First Data will act as an intermediary between business customers and online merchants employing the OneServer solution. First Data will approve credit and authorize transactions through an Internet site. Business customers will also be able to set up multiple accounts with First Data, the sources said.
