Momentous: Twitter lets power users and brands make their own Moments

Social network says soon everybody will be able to tell their stories using the popular feature.

Soon, everyone will be allowed to create Moments on Twitter.

The social network said Tuesday it's letting a broader group of influential people and brands make their own Moments by adding their own tweets and content to the popular feature. Twitter plans on letting everyone using the platform do the same in the coming months.

"By extending this creative format to more people, and eventually to everyone on Twitter, we are giving people a new and dynamic way to tell their stories," Twitter product manager Gaby Peña said in a blog post.

Moments uses hand-picked tweets, videos and images to track in real time major events including breaking news, concerts and sports. Users can find Moments by tapping the lightning bolt tab when they open Twitter.

Moments has been heavily hyped as the savior for user growth, ad sales and Wall Street skepticism. Since its debut 10 months ago, Moments has been curated by editors and small group of publishing partners, but the social network said its goal has been to open up the feature to others.

Among the initial select group to make their own Moments is activist DeRay Mckesson, a Twitter power user/insider, one of the more prominent voices in the #BlackLivesMatter movement and a close confidant of Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

"It's a powerful Twitter feature, continuing to help build community as we engage specific topics and events," Mckesson said in a statement.

Mckesson and Dorsey met two years ago during uprisings in Ferguson, Missouri, after a police officer shot and killed an unarmed black man.
