Motivated by the success of Java, Sun Microsystems plans to create a separate unit focused on the Internet programming language.

Sun Microsystems officials today announced plans to create a new company unit called Javasoft, which will focus on developing products based on the Java programming language. Alan Baratz, former CEO of Delphi, will head up the unit.

Industry analysts said that although the move isn't expected to immediately affect the way Sun sells and markets Java, creating a separate unit around the product does signal the seriousness of Sun's intent. Companies including IBM and Adobe Systems have already licensed the technology, and Microsoft officials have signed a letter of intent to do the same.
