St. George's banking app functionality is now available for the Samsung Gear 2. St. George

After becoming the first Australian bank to bring mobile banking to smartwatches, St. George has announced updated compatibility that will bring the app to Samsung's Gear 2.

The Gear 2 app is now available for download from the Google Play store, allowing customers to view their account balance on the watch screen and get directions to their nearest ATM or St. George branch.

In addition, those using the Gear 2 with a Samsung smartphone will be able to pair with their devices for "added functionality" including the ability to view SMS alerts and emails on the screen detailing key deposits and withdrawals.

The rollout of Gear 2 compatibility follows St. George's first move into the wearables space in April this year with an app designed for the Sony Smartwatch 2.

"It has been our plan to progressively roll-out a smartwatch banking capability to a number of different watches in the market following the Australian-first launch of this technology," said St. George head of mobile, Travis Tyler.

"Within our own customer base, we're seeing the popularity of Android devices continue to increase so it makes absolute sense for us to deliver more capability for customers using this platform."

St. George says it will "investigate opportunities to collaborate with Apple's smartwatch" and will release a Pebble app later in 2014 plans.
