Qantas updates iPhone app with live alerts and navigation to the airport

Tech-savvy Qantas travellers will have more information at their fingertips with the launch of a new iOS app offering travel alerts, real-time flight status updates and integrated Google Maps navigation.

The revised app will maintain the features of the existing Qantas Airways app, currently used by half a million users, including the ability to purchase flights, book hotels and view Frequent Flyer points.

However, the new iOS7-optimised version will add new features such as flight and boarding time alerts, "up to the minute" flight status information and notifications on boarding gate and luggage carousel numbers for specific flights. It also provides a recommendation on the best check-in method for each flight, whether mobile, online or at the airport.

Qantas has also worked with Google Maps to integrate navigation functionality into the app. The new app tells users the best route to the airport (using data from Google Maps) and how much time they will need to leave to get there, based on their current location. When they arrive, users can also see information on where they are in the terminal and which lounges they can access.

Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi said the improved iOS app was designed based on customer feedback.

"Our customers wanted to be able to see at a glance when they need to check in, leave for the airport or head to the gate," said Strambi. "They wanted an even simpler way to check-in, and greater access to up-to-the-minute departure information.

"The latest version of the Qantas Airways app delivers on this. It creates a personalised travel timeline to make airport departures and arrivals a breeze."

The iPhone app is available to download from the iTunes App Store on May 26, 2014 (from 3pm), with Qantas planning to release an Android version later in 2014.
