New Apple TV Remote app turns your iPhone into a touchscreen clicker
The updated companion app is now out of beta and brings the core features of the physical remote to an iOS device.
The updated remote control app for the 2015 Apple TV has arrived.
The new app, called Apple TV Remote, is basically a software version of the Apple TV's tiny remote control: There is a large area at the top for gesture controls, making it easy to navigate around the user interface. Siri has a dedicated button allowing users to ask for a specific show or to use voice to search. And the Game Mode makes use of the accelerometer and gyroscope built into Apple mobile devices. And, like the Apple TV's forthcoming software update, it also offers a "dark mode" option.
The app was first promised last year after the fourth-generation Apple TV box was introduced.
Available now from the App Store, the free app will work with any iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 9.3.2 or later, but it is not optimized for the iPad's largest screen.
The old remote application, known as iTunes Remote, is still available, and continues to work with older Apple TV models.
