Chris Rock is returning to the stand-up stage after an eight-year hiatus, and this time it's for Netflix.

The streaming service said on Wednesday that Rock will tape two new specials for its site. The first will tape in 2017, following a new world tour being planned now.

"The comedians we partner with understand the power of having a direct line to our ever-growing global audience," Lisa Nishimura, Netflix vice president of original documentary and comedy, said in a press release.

Netflix and other streaming services have been competing to get the biggest stars and hottest new original shows on their sites. Such offerings help them attract new subscribers and keep current subscribers happy.

That bet has paid off for Netflix, Amazon and others, with the companies winning Emmys for their shows. Netflix's "Patton Oswalt: Talking for Clapping" this year won the Emmy for "outstanding writing for a variety special."
