Internet music service MP3.com on Wednesday launched a music-licensing unit, designed to help artists get their songs in films, commercials and television programs, while offering options to help them maintain control over the rights to their music. The company said it has had a constant stream of requests to provide music for a variety of entertainment, advertising and other media projects.
The move comes as MP3.com, which has been besieged by lawsuits, tries to tap new revenue streams, including partnerships with retailers to pump music into their stores. The new licensing program is open to digital artists who post music on MP3.com for an annual fee of $25. Musicians can enroll in the program at MP3.com's licensing Web site.
