How to tell your Facebook friends how to pronounce your name

Tired of everyone always messing up your name in person? Facebook wants to help you help them learn how to pronounce it.

I don't have the most difficult of last names to pronounce, but I've heard my fair share of it being butchered. Those with more difficult names share in my experience and frustration, I'm sure.

Facebook has a feature tucked away on your profile aimed at teaching others how to pronounce your name, but you need to set it up before it's visible to those viewing your profile.

Here's what you need to do:

  • Log in to your Facebook account and view your profile page.

  • Click on the About button just below your cover photo.
  • Find and click on the Details About You option on the left side of the screen.

  • There you'll find the Name Pronunciation section with a link titled How do you pronounce your name? Click on it.

A list of options will be provided to you by Facebook, with the site's best guess of your name's pronunciation. You can click on the play icon to the right of each entry to hear what the mashup of letters sound like in practice.

If Facebook has the winning combination already displayed, select it. If not, you can enter your own attempt using the tips provided by Facebook. Once you're happy with the pronunciation, click Save.

Going forward, anyone who visits your profile will have the option to listen to your name being pronounced, potentially saving them embarrassment when you meet in real life.
