On Tuesday Instagram announced an update for both its iOS and Android apps. Headlining the changelog was the addition of five new filters, all of which take a subtle approach to enhancing a photo.

The only problem with adding new filters to the app is that scrolling through the (now) 24 filters thumbnails to find the right look for a photo feels like overkill. How many of the filters do you actually use? If you're anything like me, you have four or five favorites and the rest just take up space on your screen.

Also included in the update is the ability to rearrange the filters, or if you really want to clean up the editing process you can even hide filters.

In order to manage your filters, you'll need to download the latest version of Instagram for both Android and iOS. The method is the same on both platforms.

  • Start the process for posting a photo. You're not actually going to post one.
  • On the Filters screen, scroll left until you get to the end of the list. There will be a settings icon; tap on it.
  • You can uncheck a box next to the filters you'd like to disable.
  • Reorder filters using the three-lined handle next to each filter's name.
  • Tap on the X at to the top of the screen to save your changes.

The ability to disable a filter is a feature that's been a long time coming, and one that's sure to make Instagram users happy.

What do you think about the new filter? Are they subtle enough, or too subtle?
