Facebook deletes page for celebrity gossip site The Shade Room

Popular gossip outlet best known for posting photos of black celebrities vanishes from the social network.

Celebrity gossip outlet The Shade Room is on the outs with Facebook. The popular site, which boasted more than 4 million likes, has vanished from the social network, apparently for allegedly violating its terms of service.

Angie Nwandu, The Shade Room's founder, told Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard that Facebook took down the page Monday but she didn't know the reason behind the move. "I monitor the page frequently and nothing was posted that violated any rules to my knowledge," she said, adding that the amount of reports complaining about the page has been "excessive."

The page, known primarily for posting gossip about black celebrities, has experienced explosive growth in popularity during the past year. But with that growth has come questions about copyright issues related to reposting photos taken from celebrities' social media accounts.

Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment but told Jezebel that The Shade Room violated the social network's community standards. The outlet is welcome to appeal the move, a Facebook representative told the site.
